Why does YMM certification matter?
Under Law No. 3568, individuals, partnerships and companies may have their annual activities audited and certified by sworn-in certified public accountants (YMMs). Because YMMs act in a quasi-public capacity, their audit and certification is accepted as an examination carried out by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance’s own audit staff.
Certification rests on the joint and several liability that the YMM shares with the company’s managers and shareholders. This shared responsibility gives management peace of mind and strengthens third parties’ confidence in the company.
Companies whose corporate income tax returns are not certified are given higher priority for tax audits than companies with certified returns.
